General information about framing, matting & displaying artwork
- The artpiece
- Images not in frames should always be kept flat. Rolling artwork and storing in a tube is generally OK for a short amount of time, but no piece of art should be kept that way indefinitely.
- Light, heat & humidity
- Direct sunlight can deteriorate images. Keep artwork out of direct light! The same may be true for the heat generated by display lighting, so place the light a sufficient distance from the art to avoid raising its surface temperature. (** NOTE: The same is true of almost all wall-hung art, including certain sculptures and reliefs.) Humidity is a major culprit in hurting art, so don't hang your images in a bathroom. Also, very humid climates are hard on art pieces. Keep your artwork dry!
- Matting
- Acid free mats are a good idea, but chances are that the art piece won't last 400 years, so it's not vitally important. All images should be matted to prevent the art piece from being directly against the glass. Mats for this size of image (8 x 10 inches) should be at least 1 inch wide (showing inside the frame).
- Glass & Plexiglass
- You have choices between UV and normal glass, or plexi. Your glass choice should depend on where the art will be displayed. If it will be in a child's room, plexi is a good choice. In someplace where even diffused light may hit the art, UV is a good choice.
- Handling art
- In general, the less you handle any form of artwork, the longer it will last. Make sure that your hands are clean. If they are greasy (your natural body oils have built up a little), wash them throughly with soap, and make sure your hands are completely dry. Hold the art work by the corners, or edges. If you are holding the artwork flat, support it in the middle with your hand, and be careful to not get the art piece dirty or greasy.
- Storage
- If you are storing an unframed piece: do not stack art on top of one another. Do not put heavy objects on the artwork. Do not leave in sunlight or where it is humid. Keep the piece flat.
